from original hand-carved molds with
hand applied fruits, and painstakingly
hand painted in the classic technique
originated by the Della Robbia
Florentine dynasty, a family of
sculptors and ceramists active from the
15th to the 16th century.
The distinctive mastery of Della Robbia
sculptors raised Italian majolica works
from craft to high art, mostly for the
application of their sculptural skills
to hand molded clay.
Della Robbia created a style and
technique that still today carries a
unique charm. They are also recognized
for their invention of glazed
terracotta. |
